Les Cahiers de DDF : Tome2
The European Doula Guide
May 2007
The European Doula Guide is the second publication from the collection
« Cahiers de Doulas de France ». This work was published
for all the
compiled information to be easily accessible . The Association Doulas
de France wanted to start off with the Etats des Lieux des Doulas
en Europe and its English version The European Doula Guide because
it is a collective work, informative, and faithful to the DDF philosophy
of linking up and
sharing with others.
With this Guide we can take a first step towards the
creation of a European
Doula Organisation and setting up common guidelines for doula
training courses in Europe. We started compiling European statistics
on
doulas’ activities to highlight the benefits of woman to woman
support around childbirth. Doulas can also use it as a promotion tool
for their
activities in all European countries.
This work is the result of a project first mentioned
in May 2005 during the 3rd French Doulas Convention held in Paris,
then developed further in May 2006 through workshops and roundtable
discussions during the 4th French Doulas Convention. At the same time,
a group of doulas from European Countries
attending a Congress on Childbirth in Graz in November 2005 got to
know each other. They realised that in different European countries
the Doula movement was constantly growing and that they didn’t
really know about each
others’activities. A more formal European Doula Meeting was
planned to
coincide with the Midwifery Today Conference in Bad Wildbad in October
2006 then again in Gratz in November 2006.
The need for such a publication has arisen and Doulas
de France is proud and delighted to present the first document giving
a
European picture of doulas’activities: the revival of a traditional
way of
supporting women around childbirth.
We warmly thank all the doulas organisations which contributed
to the birth of this baby !
